Artist's Statement
" "
Growing up in a community active in farming, fishing, and raising cattle, taught me many things. Such a nurturing and cyclical environment was the “school of life” for me. I have been involved in art since my childhood.

I never underwent formal training in art as I grew up in a family with very limited finances. I always had difficulty getting standard art supplies. During that time in my life, I was completely unacquainted with “art” as an academic term. But over time, with patience, perseverance, and simply doing what I always loved to do, I felt encouraged and adopted a personal philosophy that has made me very independent in the styles in which I express myself.

In my art, it is me first and the medium after. Freedom is the foundation of the manner in which I express myself. I like to create, but I also want to see my personality and life experience in what I create.

I like working only with simple, yet unforgiving tools: a woodburner on wood, or ballpoint pen on paper.

To create my art, I prefer to work in a non-traditional manner and move away from the strictly academic methods because my school is everyday life.

The Dancer

Djibril N'Doye The Dancer
The Dancer
CLASS: Drawings
CATEGORY: People
MEDIA: Ballpoint Pen on Paper
SIZE: 16 x 14
YEAR: 2012
PRICE: $250
Description
Signed and Numbered Limited Edition Digital Print (unframed). "The dancer’s choreography is a complete music in itself which cohabitates with music in general. There is a body language and movement, combined with the clothing chosen to wear. The two adapt to each other harmoniously. I like to shed light on the form of the body which is ordinarily not seen through the dancer’s clothing – and view it in relation to how the body carries itself underneath its wrapping."

CLASS: Drawings
CATEGORY: People
MEDIA: Ballpoint Pen on Paper
SIZE: 16 x 14
YEAR: 2009
PRICE: $250
Description
Signed and Numbered Limited Edition Digital Print (unframed). "When I am working, I like to listen to music from different parts of the world. In African music, particularly West African, women’s voices are a driving force. They like singing together with or without musical instruments. Having five singers in this group is just my choice. There can be more or less singers. What inspires me is their harmony. Harmony is a team effort; it moves with the breath, the wind, the water, and the action. I like to see it when I feel it."
Drum Beat and Spiritual Absorption

Drum Beat and Spiritual Absorption
CLASS: Mixed Media
CATEGORY: People
MEDIA: Woodburning with colored pencil on wood
SIZE: 16 x 14
YEAR: 2012
PRICE: $250
Description
Signed and Numbered Limited Edition Digital Print (unframed). "In one of the drumming classes I was teaching, one of my students caught my attention. In the middle of the drumming, I noticed she stopped beating her drum while the drumming was still going on. She began to shake her arms up and down, right and left, her eyes closed, absorbing everything coming from the drums connecting with the depth of the spiritual sounds of the drums. After watching her many times, I got inspired by how she becomes transformed with this spiritual joy that I wanted to capture in this drawing. I symbolizes the whole class with the drummer you see through her as the spirit."
